About the Book Wanted ... Mud Blossom

Wanted…Mud Blossom is the fifth book in the Blossom Family series by Betsy Byars. The story unfolds over an eventful weekend for the Blossom family, filled with mystery and humor. Junior Blossom faces a dilemma when the school hamster, Scooty, which he is responsible for, goes missing. The prime suspect is Mud, the family dog, who is believed to have eaten the hamster and is now hiding under the porch. Amidst this chaos, old Mad Mary, also known as the Vulture Lady and Junior’s best friend, has disappeared.

The family’s dynamics are further complicated by a lovers’ spat between Maggie and Ralphie, and Vern and his friend Michael provide comic relief with their uncontrollable giggles, which they can only stop by thinking of a red joke. The story reaches its climax in a courtroom drama where Mud is put on trial for the hamster’s murder. The trial scene is filled with humor and wit, and in a delightful twist, the jury turns out to be the culprit, and the hamster is found unharmed.

Byars captures the essence of personal relationships, the tension of courtroom drama, and the value of friendships with her characteristic blend of compassion and quirky humor. The book is celebrated for its wit, laced with good sense, and is considered as funny and engaging as any in the Blossom series.
