About the Book Where Angels Fear to Tread

Where Angels Fear To Tread by E.M. Forster is a novel that delves into the cultural and social contrasts between England and Italy through the story of Lilia Herriton. Lilia, a young English widow, travels to Italy and marries Gino, a handsome but much younger Italian man, which causes a scandal in her conservative English family. The Herriton family, concerned with their reputation, sends Lilia’s brother-in-law, Philip, to prevent the marriage, but he arrives too late as Lilia has already married Gino and is expecting a child.

The novel examines the consequences of Lilia’s impulsive decision, her tragic death in childbirth, and the subsequent custody battle over her son between the Italian and English families. Forster explores themes of national character, the possibility of personal connection across social differences, and the clash between conservative English societal norms and the passionate Italian way of life. The title, taken from Alexander Pope’s An Essay on Criticism, suggests the folly of venturing into unknown territories without the wisdom of experience. Forster’s first novel, it sets the stage for his later works that continue to question social conventions and the pursuit of personal happiness.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
