About the Book Whirligig

Whirligig is a young adult novel by Paul Fleischman that tells the story of Brent Bishop, a 17-year-old boy who embarks on a cross-country journey of atonement after a tragic accident. Following a humiliating rejection at a party, Brent drives drunk and inadvertently causes a crash that kills a young woman named Lea Zamora. Wracked with guilt, Brent is given a unique sentence: to build whirligigs in Lea’s memory in the four corners of the United States. As he travels from Washington to California, Florida, and Maine, Brent learns valuable lessons about life, self-sufficiency, and the interconnectedness of humanity. The novel alternates between Brent’s perspective and the stories of those who encounter his whirligigs, showing how his journey and the whirligigs’ presence impact the lives of others.

It takes a long time to gather all the data for our new book page format with more useful descriptions, themes, and activity ideas. Meanwhile, this page is active so you can order books; it just isn't quite as informative or graphically appealing as the new page will be. Thanks for understanding! :-)
