About the Book Who Really Killed Cock Robin?

Who Really Killed Cock Robin? by Jean Craighead George is an ecological mystery that engages young readers with a timely message about environmental protection. The story unfolds in Saddleboro, where the town’s beloved mascot, Cock Robin, has died under mysterious circumstances. Tony Isidoro, an eighth-grader, takes on the zoology project his brother had to abandon when called to army service. With the help of the local mill owner’s daughter and his brother’s zoologist friend from college, Tony investigates the death that has puzzled and saddened the town.

Tony’s detective work uncovers a web of ecological damage: the mayor’s lawn fertilizer has polluted the local marsh, mother robin and her eggs were killed by a chemical called PCB, released by the mill owner under orders from NASA. This chemical combined with DDT from an up-wind orchard and a weed killer called 2, 4, 5-T. Ultimately, it’s revealed that Cock Robin was killed by a sparrow—or rather, by the chain reaction set off when 10,000 Florida sparrows died from eating mercury-treated seeds, leading millions of parasitic flies to attack the migrating robins.

The book’s themes are woven into an adventure with buoyant tone and edge-of-the-chair excitement, reflecting the intricate connections within the web of life and the consequences of human actions on the environment.
